The Baratza Sette 270 coffee grinder is one for filter coffee and espresso enthusiasts alike. Breaking away from the former standard, this grinder has a fixed inner burr and a rotating outer burr. Unlike every grinder of its size, the Sette’s revolutionary 40mm steel conical burrs cut grinding time in half, producing 3.5g to 5.5g per second.

Developed over 8 years, the burrs will remain sharp and aligned for many years, as well as retain less ground coffee than competing grinders. Also appearing for the first time from Baratza is a gear speed reduction of 19:1 with the grinder’s new super-efficient gear drive system.

The Sette 270’s 30 grind settings can produce coffee grounds for espresso, as well as Chemex. If you’re brewing espresso and want to get it just right, the grinder provides 9 micro-adjustment settings to help you achieve that perfect grind size.

The LED display allows users to program 3 dosing settings, down to a tenth of a second. You can even grind right into your coffee brewer, thanks to the convertible holding mechanism.

Decent Grinder

Great grinder, but I recommend putting the extra shims in so that it will grind finer. They come included and are super easy to install. The dial is a bit wobbly, and it is aloud grinder, but it does a good job. Delivery was prompt and smooth.

The shim!

Other than not realising it is essential to add the (1) shim for expresso coffee, the machine seams very good. Have had consistent coffee since I’ve dialled it to grind 18 grams at the correct grind 1 A for my coffee bean. (6 cups so far) Discovered the shim was vital from another video review of this machine.

Grindy McGrindface

I have no experience with coffee grinders other than that they’re noisy but appear to be essential to the coffee making process (FYI: I don’t drink coffee). My wife drinks coffee and likes this grinder. It only took her a couple of days and a few adjustments on the grinder to get a better result from the automatic machine she was used to. Now she has more control over her grind and isn’t at the mercy of her automatic machine that (more often that not) would short change her grind time. Unless everybody in the house is already awake, I don’t recommend using the grinder first thing in the morning. Having said that though, it’s not too loud, and you can easily stand beside it doing whatever else you coffee drinkers need to do without sticking your fingers in your ears (unless that’s your thing, in which case go for...read moreI have no experience with coffee grinders other than that they’re noisy but appear to be essential to the coffee making process (FYI: I don’t drink coffee). Sette 270

Good overall, timer is accurate to 0.01 seconds which allows for lots of adjustability. Can be tedious to dial in when changing beans due to timer and grind size affecting each other and also needing individual changes. Also the unit is very noisy, much more than expecting even after reading lots of reviews saying it.

Quality Grinder

Great consistent ground size. Enables very fine adjustment of grind. Quick and efficient delivery. Would have given 5 stars only cradle for portafilter slightly clunky. But grinds beans very well so overall very happy with this

FAQ

Yes the Baratza Sette 270 is a very good entry level grinder for espresso.
Yes, the Baratza Sette 270 Grinder is designed to grind fine for espresso, and all the way as coarse for French Press and Cold Brew.
Yes, you can try spritzing the beans with some water, known as RDT. The Ross Droplet Technique (RDT) is a method used in espresso preparation where a small amount of water is applied to coffee beans before grinding. This technique helps reduce static electricity and clumping of the coffee grounds, resulting in a more consistent grind size and improved extraction during brewing.
For optimal grinder maintenance, if you frequently use dark roast beans, which tend to be oilier, it's advisable to clean your grinder more often, ideally once a month. However, if you prefer light roasts or use your grinder infrequently, you can likely extend the cleaning interval to once every three months. Adjusting the cleaning frequency based on the type of beans you use and your usage pattern helps maintain optimal grinder performance.
To get the correct amount of coffee in the basket, it is recommended to initially use a set of scales as reference to the exact weight you are after, and then you're able to adjust the time of grinding to match the weight needed, for consistent dosing. Please note: when you change the Grind size, you'll also need to change the grind time slightly to match.

JR
Hi guys, We have a Baratza Sette 270 grinder that has been brilliant, hubby bought a new coffee machine last Christmas and in tandem with your grinder I’ve managed to create brews of a high standard. I’ve noticed lately though the machine is emitting a lot of residual ‘dust’ that results in residual grind on my bench around the grinder. I hadn’t changed the settings, and have used two different coffee blends in case freshness was an issue. Would appreciate some tips on how to address. I mainly make café lattes by the way. Thanks in advance!
Answers (1)
Hi Jane, Thank you for reaching out. These grinders have a mighty motor and produce high RPMs, it is not uncommon for them to dispense some residual chaff in addition to creating static. If you want to reach out to the team hello@alternativebrewing.com.au, they can give you further information, but in general, I would say it is fairly normal for this to occur. Remember the lighter the coffee, the more particles as they contain less oils and tend not to stick together as much as darker roasts. Kind Regards, Alternative Brewing.

How noisy is the Baritza Sette 270 grinder Our Vario grinder has died and we want the next grinder to be quieter
Answers (1)
Hi David,

Thanks for your question. The Baratza Sette range are not known for being quiet grinders. This would be the least desirable feature. If you are looking for a truly quiet grinder that performs excellently, look to the Eureka Silenzio, or another of the Eureka Grinders is much quieter than the Sette range.

Kind regards, Alternative Brewing

Hi, is this grinder appropriate for brewing in a moka pot? Thanks :-)
Answers (1)
Hi Jo,

Thanks for your question. Yes, the Baratza Sette 270 would be a very good choice for grinding coffee to use in a Moka Pot.

Kind regards, Alternative Brewing
